5 Signs You Need New Tires Before Winter in Northeast Ohio

Winter in Northeast Ohio is no joke. Lake-effect snow, icy roads, and unpredictable temperatures can turn your daily commute into a dangerous obstacle course. Your tires are your first line of defense against these conditions, and driving on worn or damaged tires puts you and your family at serious risk.

Here are five warning signs that indicate it’s time to replace your tires before winter hits:

1. Low Tread Depth – The penny test never lies. Insert a penny into your tire tread with Lincoln’s head facing down. If you can see the top of his head, your tread is below 2/32 of an inch and it’s time for new tires. For winter driving in Ohio, you actually want at least 4/32 inch for safe traction on snow and ice.

2. Visible Cracks or Bulges – Check your tire sidewalls for cracks, cuts, or bulges. These are signs of structural damage that can lead to a blowout, especially in cold weather when rubber becomes less flexible. If you see any bulging, replace that tire immediately.

3. Uneven Wear Patterns – If your tires are wearing more on one side or in the center, you may have alignment or inflation issues. Uneven wear reduces traction and means your tires won’t perform well in winter conditions. Have your alignment checked and consider new tires if the wear is significant.

4. Vibration While Driving – If you feel unusual vibration in the steering wheel or through the seat, especially at highway speeds, your tires may be out of balance or have internal damage. This vibration worsens in cold weather and can indicate tires that are ready to fail.

5. Age Over 6 Years – Even if your tires look fine, rubber degrades over time. Check the DOT code on your tire sidewall – the last four digits indicate the week and year of manufacture. Tires older than 6 years should be replaced regardless of tread depth, as the rubber compounds break down and lose their grip.
